Of course this is just a sampling of what is on my shelf, and I refer to a lot more than this; but these 5 will give you an idea of what to look for in several categories.

Rosemary Gladstar’s Family Herbal

This book is packed full of helpful information for the entire family. Gladstar not only shares information on staying healthy, but herbal formulas that treat many common ailments. The chapters include “Taming Stress and Anxiety,” “Home Remedies for Everyday Ailments,” and ones for children, women, men, and elders. A practicing herbalist for over 35 years, Gladstar founded the California School of Herbal Studies, Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center, and United Plant Savers(an organization “dedicated to the conservation and cultivation of at risk North American medicinal plants”) I have used several recipes from this book with great success and recommend it highly.

The Green Pharmacy

Dr. James A. Duke is one of my favorite herbal authors. I started with this book and went on to purchase several of his others. An ethno-botanist retired from the USDA, Dr. Duke arranged The Green Pharmacy by ailment. Want to know what to do for canker sores? Go to page 114. He offers a brief discussion of each ailment and a list of herbs that may help the condition. His other books include The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook and Dr. Duke’s Essential Herbs.

The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine

With a 3rd edition due out in July, this wonderfully scientific book was written by Michael Murray, ND and Joseph Pizzorno, ND. Like The Green Pharmacy, it is arranged by ailment. Murray and Pizzorno however, discuss symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments from a medical perspective. They also cover diet, nutritional supplements, and herbal treatments—complete with dosages. One of my first natural health volumes, I still refer to the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine often.

Prescription for Nutritional Healing

With similar content as the previous book, Phyllis A. Balch, CNC and James F. Balch, MD wrote Prescription for Nutritional Healing for a layman to understand. Also arranged according to ailment, they give a comprehensive discussion of the condition, nutritional, herbal, and dietary recommendations, as well as lifestyle considerations. It also contains the section “Understanding the Elements of Health” which includes nutrition, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, etc. Sporting 776 pages of natural health wisdom, this volume is the most dog-eared and tattered on my shelf.

Nourishing Traditions

I often vacillate about where to keep this book—in the pantry with the cookbooks or on my shelf of health related volumes. In Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon challenges every politically correct nutritional dictum you have ever heard. This book contains chapters that explain the truth about fats, carbs, proteins, milk, salt, and a lot more. Be prepared, you will not read in this book to eat margarine for your heart disease, to cut back on your salt for high blood pressure, or to abstain from animal products for anything. Categorically a cookbook, Nourishing Traditions earns its place in my list because of the wealth of information in its introductory chapters and on the sidebars of every page.

If you’re just starting to build a natural health library, I hope this list gives you a place to start. There are so many books published, I know it can get overwhelming. Or, perhaps, you’ve already got a great library and have a few suggestions to share. Please do in the comment section below.

This article, Arsenic in Apple Juice From China – Says Dr. Oz, was originally published at Natural Health Ezine.

Arsenic in apple juice—the breaking news of the past week. Started by Dr. Mehmet Oz, on his popular television program, this controversy has either raised fear and doubt in the minds of parents that regularly give apple juice to their children, or fueled the fire of scoffers who do not really care. When I was asked to look into this matter and write a post on it, I have to admit that I was leaning toward the scoffer camp. But after serious investigation, I find myself taking a totally different stance—that of, “take it seriously, but don’t let it be your burden.” Let me explain.

I first thought it silly. I thought I knew that apple seeds naturally contain arsenic. My oldest son has eaten his apples, core and all, his entire life and he’s still kicking. “What’s the big deal?” I asked. Then after a little reading, I discovered that apples do not have arsenic in them, they have cyanide—an entirely different chemical. So, I kept digging; and here are the facts as I discovered them.

Arsenic is a semi-metal element that occurs naturally in the earth’s crust. You can neither taste nor smell it. It is used as a wood preservative, and in the manufacture of paints, dyes, certain drugs, soaps, and some electronic parts. In these manufacturing processes, and in the mining industry, it is released into the environment. Also, as pertinent to this discussion, it has been used extensively as a pesticide from the 1860s. Found to be effective against the codling moth on apple trees, orchards continued its use in the United States until 1988.

The EPA limit for concentrations of arsenic in drinking water is 10 parts per billion.

In September, The Dr. Oz Show reported test results of 36 samples from 5 different brands of apple juice purchased in 3 different locations across the country. The independent lab testing these samples found that 10 had higher arsenic levels than allowed in drinking water—up to 23 parts per billion. Dr. Oz also disclosed that 60% of the apple concentrate used in the production of apple juice comes from China—a country that has not yet banned the use of lead-arsenic insecticides.

The FDA currently allows 23 parts per billion of arsenic in apple juice. However, the agency has never seized apple juice that exceeded that level.

The FDA criticized Dr. Oz’s lab results because they only report the total arsenic levels, not inorganic arsenic versus organic arsenic. Most scientists agree that inorganic arsenic is toxic and a known carcinogen while organic arsenic is “less toxic.” However, in an appearance on Good Morning America Dr. Oz stated, “(There is) a lot of debate over the safety of organic arsenic; and the body converts organic to some types of inorganic that are very toxic. It is misleading to claim that all organic arsenic is safe.”

This past Wednesday National Public Radio reported that Consumers Union, publishers of Consumer Reports, tested 88 samples of popular juice brands purchased in grocery stores. Ten percent of the samples contained more than 10 ppb (the legal limit for drinking water). As a result of these tests, Consumers Union asks the FDA to adjust their current standard of 23 ppb to 3 ppb.

And that is where we, the consumers, are left. Waiting, wondering, “What is our government going to decide is best for us?” However, as I reported after watching the movie Food, Inc., our government is not the one I want making these decisions for my family. What does Dr. Oz recommend? He said that he would not quit giving his 4 children apple juice. He said that drinking a box of apple juice is not going to cause irreparable damage to a child. He is concerned with long-term effects. He is concerned for the children that drink large quantities of apple juice. He said, bottom line, “The FDA should not allow more arsenic in our apple juice than they allow in our drinking water.”

That leads me to my “totally different stance.” Even if apple juice had no harmful arsenic, should children be drinking large quantities of it? One mom commented on Dr. Oz’s website that her child drinks “vast amounts of the stuff.” But nutritionists recommend that babies under the age of 6 months have nothing but breast milk, and that older children have no more than 6 ounces of fruit juice a day. Why limit something that seems to be healthy? Fruit juices are high in sugar. In fact, both apple juice and Mountain Dew are 13% sugar. And in a country that predicts that one-third of the next generation will suffer with Type-2 diabetes, why would we want our children drinking 13% sugar all day long?

The decision is up to you. Trust the FDA, continue to allow your children to drink fruit juice all day long and not worry about cancer in their future. Or, as Dr. Oz and most nutritionists recommend, everything in moderation.

Putting your well-being in danger before you even take that first sip of coffee in the morning? Is it even possible? Unfortunately, far too many of us are sleepy-eyed when it comes to splashing the water on our faces in the morning and filling our morning routines with a cluster of products that can be detrimental to our health.

Face wash. Concealer. Mascara. Body soap.

Just like the sneakiest of producers within the food industry, the brains behind personal care products slab on the jargon thick, keeping us fixated on the “natural” and “organic” qualities of a product before looking beyond to see the harmful chemicals packed into each dollop of product.

Though we often pluck these products from the shelves to give us a hygienic boost, slightly turning the box of some of these popular personal care products might send us running far away from the shower stall.

So what does it take be an efficient box turner in the personal care aisle? The tips below will help you sift and sort through the not-so-fulfilling promises of most toiletries to find the true goodness that will benefit you and your body at the end of the day.

Ditch Natural

Similar to clutching the grocery cart at the sight of the rolling aisles of “natural” food products, the “natural” body products can very easily sway us in the wrong direction as well.

Natural is not the same word that our great grandmothers were dealing with. Natural, these days, can be a variety of unrecognizable and unpronounceable ingredients jammed into the crawl space of the label on the back of our beauty products. Before you go relying on the “natural” product line, be sure to turn that box over and do some reading.

Know your stuff

The thought of reading every label on the back of beauty products sounds like a separate item on our to-do lists altogether. But how can we be more informed consumers without piling homework on our plates? Thanks to the age of the internet, it is now possible to do your research quickly and efficiently before you make the buy.

Check out CosmeticsDatabase.com. This comprehensive listing of all goods that cluster our medicine cabinets—from cover up and concealer to deodorants and perfumes—gives each product a rating along with an overview outlining the hazards and risks behind the labels.

This database is my go-to for any product, the crook of the world wide web that I am surely checking on before I scratch beauty care from my shopping list.

Nail the perpetrators.

Parabens are the second most common ingredient in skin care products … but unlike the front runner, water, you don’t want these parabens anywhere near you.

Studies show they possess mild estrogen-like qualities being thought to cause cancerous tumors. You will find these parabens lurking within the products making all the “natural” claims to its eager consumers.

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate

This is a head scratcher, literally. A cheap detergent derived from petroleum, this cosmetic is often said to be derived from coconuts. And while shampoos and conditioners exist to add moisture to our roots and give our hair life and body of its own, this ingredient will only dry us out, causing scratching and itchiness.

Synthetic Fragrances

Fragrance, though it reminds of the days of mom’s perfume bottles, is a nasty word. Fragrance is the loophole for cosmetic producers to pack over 200 ingredients into a product without having to tell you a single one of them… Like secret family recipes but without the comfort of homemade stew.

Choose products that are fragrance free to avoid caking all sorts of chemicals on your body and face.

The Wrap-Up

Above is just the beginnings of a list of devious little ingredients that you don’t want coming anywhere near your skin. The best way to map your way around and away from chemicals and products that can be harmful to your health is by looking into the products that you use on a daily basis. Read the labels. Look up some of the ingredients. Find what you are really painting onto your nails or rubbing onto your skin.

Of course, it is not always feasible to throw out the whole of our cosmetic cabinet to make room for all-natural, all-organic skin products. However, a gradual shifting out of using products that contain too many harmful chemicals is a wise and responsible choice to make for our bodies in order to promote living a longer and healthier life.

In 2007, congress passed a new energy law that calls for incandescent bulbs to be phased out starting in 2012, and completely eliminated by 2014. Some people cheered congress’s move as a progressive, environmentally friendly decision.

However, as a rule of thumb, many people don’t like change. When that change is initiated by the government, they like it even less. Whenever a new change or law comes down the pipe, it’s a virtual guarantee that someone out there will loudly protest, citing some major problem with the new change that had been mysteriously overlooked. What “major problem” do people find with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)? Well, didn’t you know? CFLs are dangerous – even poisonous.

Why the Complainers Have a Point

The people who claim that CFLs are dangerous do have a point – to a certain extent. All fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury. CFLs, designed for in-home use, contain mercury, and commercial fluorescent light bulbs – the long tubes you see in retail stores and offices everywhere – also contain mercury. Those commercial-style fluorescent light bulbs have been used for decades, and they contain more mercury than the smaller CFLs. Therefore, if people complaining about the death of incandescents are really so concerned, why should they not also lobby to completely remove fluorescent tubes from their local public schools?

As long as the bulb isn’t broken, the mercury can’t harm anyone. However, if you drop and break a fluorescent light bulb, you do need to be careful.

When a Bulb Breaks

A compact fluorescent light bulb contains only about 5 milligrams of mercury, which is about the amount of mercury that would fit on the head of a pin. On the other hand, 5 milligrams is enough mercury that it can contaminate 6,000 gallons of water (Source: MSNBC.com). In other words, if you break a bulb in your home, be very cautious when you clean it up. Don’t use a vacuum cleaner, because the mercury will remain indefinitely inside the machine and spread the mercury to other parts of the house. Instead, try to scoop up all the pieces without directly touching them.

What you don’t need to do is what one mom in Maine did in 2007. After breaking a bulb in her daughter’s room, she called Home Depot to find out what she should do. Home Depot recommended she call an environmental hazard company, which she did. They wanted to charge her $2,000 to clean up the broken bulb. Since her home insurance wouldn’t pay for it and she didn’t have the money, she simply closed the room off, sealing it with plastic.

Later, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection did their own inspection. They found that even the carpet where the bulb had broken contained only 34 nanograms per square inch of mercury – well below the 300 nanograms per square inch that marks the beginning of a mercury poisoning hazard. (Source)

When a bulb burns out, don’t throw it in the garbage. You can recycle bulbs at your local Home Depot, Ikea, certain other retail stores, or mail it to designated recycling centers, depending upon your state. Recycling the bulbs means that the mercury will be disposed or re-used safely.

Why the Complainers are Ultimately Wrong

Here’s the thing: Yes, CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs contain mercury. Yes, that mercury can seep into our environment if broken bulbs aren’t properly handled. But – and it’s a big but – incandescent bulbs are still responsible for the release of far more mercury into the environment.

How could this be? Incandescent bulbs don’t contain mercury, do they?

No, incandescent bulbs do not contain mercury. An incandescent bulb uses a heated filament to produce light; a fluorescent uses gas and mercury to produce light. However, roughly half of the electricity in the United States is produced by coal-burning power plants. These power plants dump a huge amount of mercury into the atmosphere – in 2006 alone, coal-burning plants emitted 50.7 tons of mercury into the air. That’s the equivalent of nine billion broken CFLs.

Because incandescent bulbs are less efficient than CFLs, a plant will typically emit 13.16 mg of mercury to power a regular 75-watt bulb for an hour. To power a comparable 20-watt CFL, only 3.51 mg of mercury is emitted (Source: Popular Mechanics).

Conclusion: Al Gore Still has it Right

Like it or not, the figures cited above conclusively lay to rest the argument that CFLs are more dangerous for humans and the environment than incandescents. Even if you hate to admit it, Al Gore and his Inconvenient Truth had it right all along. Despite what the naysayers claim, congress made the right decision in phasing out incandescent light bulbs.

Yamileth is an up-and-coming expert on health and helping people decide on a health insurance plan. She lives in Miami, FL.

Advocates of alternative medicine and natural health care have long struggled to find health insurance coverage that includes their preferred treatments.

Why is this the case? In the past, there have been few scientifically controlled studies on the effectiveness of these treatments–despite many positive ancecdotes. Health insurance companies want to save money, and therefore do not want to cover anything that they believe doesn’t work.

Fortunately, that scenario is changing for the better. Experiments have proven the benefits of massage therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal and other forms of natural and alternative treatments. As a result, 14 out of the 18 major health insurers in the United States cover common homeopathic treatments.

In order to find a health insurance plan that fits your needs, you must do your research and ask questions. That advice is no different for those committed to natural living. Remember that more comprehensive coverage is generally associated with higher monthly premiums.

Find out if any health plan you are considering offers the level of coverage you want; some may only include a limited number of visits per year, or simply include a discount for practicioners’ fees.

In addition, keep in mind any other limitations a policy may have. Typical limitations include coverage that only applies when the insurer deems the treatment medically necessary or for certain health conditions, as well as the requirement that any practicioners are licensed by their particular governing board.

Some insurers have provider networks, which often consist of both conventional and alternative doctors and facilities. The insurance company has negotiated significantly cheaper fees from those providers, in exchange for a guaranteed volume of patients. If you already have a regular alternative physician, make sure that he or she is in the network in order to maximize your savings. If not, you must either go out-of-network and pay the full cost yourself (instead of just a nominal co-payment) or choose a new provider.

Some natural health treatments are more mainstream (and therefore more likely to be covered) than others. Since a high-deductible health insurance plan allows for greater consumer choice and flexibility, it may be the right solution for you. While you will continue paying for your natural health visits and prescriptions out-of-pocket, that money will first be deposited into a Health Savings Account (HSA) tax-free, therefore saving you money.

At the same time, such plans offer catastrophic coverage for traditional medicine during emergencies, when you are most likely to use it.

Many fear that healthcare reform will have a negative impact on natural health fans. The recently passed law has an emphasis on effectiveness testing in order to eliminate wasteful health spending, which some fear will leave alternative and natural remedies out in the cold.

As a natural health supporter, some states are more amenable to your viewpoint. Health plans in Washington state are considered especially accepting of alternative health solutions. Regardless of the state you reside in, you shouldn’t give up hope on receiving the type of health care you want and deserve.

A friend recently passed along an article to me that suggests the pesticide usage on strawberries is about to become worse.

According to the article…

… And in Sacramento, a pesticide so cancer- Geneva Conventions apply to them. And in Sacramento, a pesticide so cancer- causing that it’s often used specifically to create cancer in rats for medica experiments was just proposed for approval for use on the state’s strawberry crop.

And…

The state’s own Department of Pesticide Regulation had advised in a report against approving the gas, methyl iodide. And several Nobel prize winners asked the U.S. EPA not to approve it. (It did.) According to farmers, there are a number of alternatives to the stuff, alternatives to the stuff, including solarization, anaerobic soil disinfestation and natural pesticides. And it’s especially important to use safe materials only in strawberries, which hold the chemicals they’re treated with.

Okay there you have it. Just another reason to go organic, especially with strawberries.
The study took a large group of cancer patients and had some regularly participate in yoga and others not – and it provided pretty conclusive evidence that yoga helps cancer patients feel better and sleep better.

Here are a few high-lights from the article…

“new research released Thursday ahead of the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting suggests yoga has beneficial effects on sleep quality, fatigue, and overall quality of life in cancer survivors.”

“Compared to how they felt beforehand, the survivors who participated in the yoga program afterward reported improvements in sleep quality and fatigue. Yoga participants also used less sleep medication than they did before the program, while non-yoga participants actually increased their use of sleep medication.”

“Distler said she would “absolutely” recommend the practice for cancer survivors with sleep problems.”

While it seems like something that can only happen in movies, it is very close to being executed…

The United States Emergency Medical Powers Acts and Federal legislation, including the Patriot Acts I, II and III, BARDA and others provide for mandatory vaccination or drugging. No exemptions (religious or otherwise) are provided. Those who refuse will be classified as felons at the State level, subject to immediate incarceration and quarantine of indefinite length in jails or other facilities reserved for such “vaccine refusers.” In a frightening “Big Lie” propaganda move, those who doubt the effectiveness of unproven, uninsurable vaccines are being called ” Vaccine Resisters” and being equated to a new form of “terrorism.”

That means that untested, potentially lethal vaccines and dangerous drugs like Tamiflu could be forced upon people who do not wish them and who would face incarceration or worse if they choose not to accept them. The CDC has said that there would be no exemptions and that there would be “a certain amount of human wastage”. Instead, we demand the right to Self-Shield in our own homes!

What You Can Do NOW!!

We must make this demand that the government respect our rights become “viral” through your efforts and result in many hundreds of thousands of messages to decision makers, on the State and Federal levels!

You can fill complete the form below and we will send it to your congressional and state representatives. You can also forward this request to your friends and family.

After watching some of this, you see a scary parallel to what was happening in the movie "Erin Brockovich". Basically, Monsanto allegedly (or not) covered up a lot of polluting that they were doing in small towns that was the likely cause of dozens of terrible diseases and ultimately lives lost. I try to take documentaries like this with a grain of salt, since you never know who or what agenda may be behind it, but it is scary nonetheless.
