Health benefits of lemon water

April 27, 2009

Do you ever squeeze a lemon in your water?  If so, you may be benefitting your body more than you realize.

I remember reading in a health book that drinking pure water with lemon squeezed in it was one of the healthiest beverages you can drink. The primary benefit  that I am aware of is the wonderful alkalizing properties of the lemon juice. By having lemon squeezed in your water you create a beverage that raises your body’s pH. Put simply, having a low pH (or being Acidic) is not a healthy place to be. Our bodies do not function nearly as well when they are acidic. They are more susceptible to sickness, disease, fatigue, etc.

Jethro Kloss reported in his book Back To Eden:

“The medicinal value of the lemon is as follows: It is an antiseptic, or is an agent that prevents sepsis [the presence of pathogenic bacteria] or putrefaction [decomposition of tissue]. It is also anti-scorbutic, a term meaning a remedy which will prevent disease and assist in cleansing the system of impurities.”

A few more wonderful benefits of putting lemons in your water

  • lemon juice cleans your mouth
  • it controls excessive bile flow
  • it dislodges phlegm
  • it aides in the digestive process – heartburn and bloating
  • lemon water helps alleviate constipation
  • it helps prevent vomiting
  • and it helps with throat issues
  • cleanses the liver and kidneys
  • and even works as a natural skin cleanser

Great article – It’s true, adding lemon to your water has a number of health benefits, but the most important benefit is that it makes water a whole lot more appealing to people which means they usually drink a bunch more water!

As an alternative to lemons, or when you’re on the go, our product, True Lemon is a great substitute. It’s 100% all natural crystallized lemon.

If you’re interested in sampling it, please shoot me an email at taylor[at]true-lemon.com. And you can check out our website at http://bit.ly/lC9tM

I don’t understand why lemon in water has an alkalizing effect, when lemon contains citric acid. The water certainly tastes more acidic. I’m fairly sure water has a more-or-less neutral pH, so surely squeezing lemon into it acidifies it, if anything. Can anyone explain this?

Anthony, it’s about how your body metabolizes what it takes in. Lemon IS acidic on it’s own and in your mouth, but once your body metabloizes the chemical structure changes. So, it’s a good idea to brush your teeth after lemon water, but once in the body you can be sure it’s alkali.

How does lemon differ from grapefruit? I love fresh grapefruit juice.
I use only organic produce and feel it’s far superior in every way.
