Organic foods are becoming more and more popular with consumers. Part of the reasoning behind this is purely common sense which tells us that foods that are not doused in chemicals, hormones and preservatives are better for our bodies. Secondly, there have been so many food recalls lately that it is finally starting to sink in that we are taking chances with our health, and that of our children’s health by buying foods that are grown, produced and packaged in places like Mexico and China.
That being said, the advantages are using organic foods are great. One of the most logical advantages of consuming organic food product’s is that they are usually monitored closely to make sure they are truly organic. Keep in mind that there are degree’s of “organic” when deciding what foods to purchase. Those foods bearing a label that states the product is 100% organic should be. Some organic foods though are processed somewhat differently, so it’s a good idea to know where your foods are grown and how they are handled.
Variety of organic foods available…
For those that enjoy meat there is organic beef, chicken, buffalo, elk, etc. The differences between these types of meats and those that are purchased in the grocery stores are immense. It begins with how the animal is raised. True organic meat is usually free range, which basically means the cattle for instance, are allowed to graze on unpolluted grassy pastures, as opposed to being born in a pen that is extremely small, and raised being fed food that contains hormones for un-naturally fast growth. They are also given antibiotics which remain in the meat even after being processed. The advantages of consuming organic meat has been scientifically proven to be healthier, especially for children.
Organic Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are also available and you can see the difference of these types of items just by glancing at them. Organic apples for instance, are not covered in a layer of artificial wax such as the non-organic types. Many of the fruits and vegetables consumed in the Untied States are shipped in from Mexico. The food standards in that Country are unfortunately not as well managed as those placed on farmers in the U.S. Many of the fruits and vegetable that are grown in other countries are watered with recycled water. Some of this water when tested, is shown to have high levels of sewage and E Coli bacteria. Organic fruits and vegetables that are certified will have been watered with fresh water or highly regulated recycled water, making them a much better choice.
If it is at all possible, switching to organically grown foods can only benefit you and your family members. It is stated that if most people saw the way their favorite foods were produced, they would never touch that particular food again! Organic doesn’t always mean better, but more often then not, it is a much healthier way to eat.
